APFC Panel vs Automatic Capacitor Bank: Complete Guide
The terms APFC panel and automatic capacitor bank often describe the same type of stepped power factor correction assembly. Product scope matters more than the label.
How the terms are used
APFC emphasizes the automatic controller and its power-factor function. Automatic capacitor bank emphasizes the switched capacitor stages. Either term may describe a complete protected assembly, but the supplier’s component schedule defines what is included.
What to compare
Compare total kVAr, step sizes, controller capability, switching technology, harmonic suitability, protection, discharge provisions, ventilation and monitoring. A bare capacitor bank is not equivalent to a complete automatic panel.
Select from measurements
Use actual reactive demand and load variation to determine capacity and steps. Assess harmonics before selecting standard or detuned equipment and confirm behaviour on generator supply and at light load.
