Power Quality
How to Select the Right APFC Panel for an Industry
APFC selection requires measured load behaviour and power quality data. A transformer rating alone does not define the required capacitor capacity.
Determine compensation
Record real power, existing displacement power factor, reactive demand and load changes. For sinusoidal conditions, Qc = P × [tan(arccos(PF1)) − tan(arccos(PF2))], with P in kW and Qc in kVAr. Harmonic-rich installations also require analysis of distortion power factor.
Choose steps and switching
Choose small enough steps to follow light-load demand without overcompensation. Contactor switching suits slower changes; thyristor switching may suit rapid variations when properly specified.
Assess harmonics and operating conditions
Survey drives, rectifiers, UPS loads and voltage/current harmonics before deciding on standard or detuned equipment. Confirm reactor-capacitor compatibility, temperature, ventilation, CT location and generator operation. Set the target to suit the utility and site study.
