Solar DCDB: Components, Working and Applications
A solar DCDB is a DC distribution and protection assembly placed in the PV power path. Some designs preserve individual circuits; others include string combining.
Components
Depending on the approved schematic, components include DC isolators, PV-rated fuses where needed, surge protective devices, terminals, earthing connections and a suitable enclosure. Circuit arrangements vary by inverter and array design.
Working
During operation the board carries PV current to the intended inverter inputs. Suitable switching provides isolation and protective devices address their specified fault conditions. Surge protection requires a coordinated earthing and bonding arrangement.
Applications and checks
DCDBs are used in rooftop, commercial and other PV systems where external DC protection is required. Verify polarity, maximum cold-weather voltage, circuit current, MPPT separation and inverter-integrated protection before specifying a board.
