What Is a Solar Combiner Box? Complete Guide
A solar combiner box brings multiple compatible PV source circuits into a common outgoing circuit. It can also provide protection, isolation and monitoring.
Working principle
Parallel strings feed individual inputs and join through a rated bus arrangement. Parallel connection adds current while voltage remains approximately the string voltage. Only strings intended to operate together should share an output.
What can be inside
Depending on the design, the box contains string fuses, terminals, busbars, a DC isolator, surge protection and monitoring sensors. Not every inverter needs an external combiner; check its integrated protection and input arrangement.
Selection and applications
Specify input count, combined output current, maximum DC voltage, cable terminations, enclosure conditions and MPPT compatibility. Combiner boxes are used in compatible rooftop and utility-scale array designs.
