How to Select a Transformer for an Industrial Application
Industrial transformer selection begins with the required voltage conversion, load profile and installation environment.
Set the rating and connection
Document primary and secondary voltage, frequency, simultaneous kVA demand and expansion needs. Specify vector group, neutral requirements and compatibility with other transformers if parallel operation is planned.
Check performance and faults
Review impedance, regulation, losses, motor starting voltage dip and downstream short-circuit duty. Drives and other nonlinear loads may require additional thermal assessment or a suitable transformer design.
Confirm site requirements
Choose cooling and insulation suited to ambient temperature, altitude, indoor or outdoor location and fire provisions. Specify protection, tap arrangement, earthing, cable interfaces and required routine test documentation.
